CHURCH OF THE GREAT GOD: By the time His ministry commences at the age of thirty (Luke 3:23), He is no novice, but a fully mature, sober-minded, qualified leader. Half a year earlier, another thirty-year-old man had suddenly appeared out of the wilderness of Judea in the area of the Jordan River, preaching a fiery message of repentance and baptizing "for the remission of sins" (Luke 3:3). It is probably in the fall of that year that Jesus journeys from Nazareth to the Jordan to be baptized by John. It appears that He inaugurated His public ministry at Nazareth on a Sabbath day, reading aloud the portion of Isaiah 61:1-2, a well-known Messianic prophecy of His work to Israel.
DANIEL BLACK: By custom, rabbis were not regarded as mature enough to begin their public ministry until age 30.
This custom was suggested by the law of Moses, which stipulated that priests could not begin their public ministry in full until they were 30 years old (Num. 4:2-3, 22-23, 29-30).
EDWARD L. BROMFIELD: although Asher’s sons had no direct claim to the priesthood, Asher’s daughters would marry high priests, thus making some of Asher’s descendents high priests. The point in all this is that Anna, may have been the wife of a former priest who had officiated the office of high priest. She departed not from the Temple during the times of prayer, just as is said of the sons of Aaron (Leviticus 10:7). This would have been especially interesting to Theophilus, who, I have argued, was the officiating high priest at the time when Luke wrote his Gospel narrative. In other words, her testimony would have carried weight with Theophilus.
