President of the Philippines
To all the participants of the 56th Philippines-Israel Friendship Day
[Released on February 26, 2014]
My warmest greetings to all the participants of the 56th Philippines-Israel Friendship Day
Filipinos share with Israel a profound relationship that goes back to our Spanish era, when Jewish families first settled on our shores. We also remember one of the darkest periods of war, and how a community of Jews took refuge in the Philippines. We commemorate the historic and spiritual ties between two peoples joined together by humanitarian ideals and empowered by hope; today, we celebrate the 56th anniversary of the official signing of the treaty which began our diplomatic relations.
As we move forward in this time of peace and development, we not only strengthen our engagements in commerce and business, but also deepen our bond with our Israeli brothers and sisters. Let us all work together and make our nations’ friendship an example of peace, prosperity, and harmony.
I wish you a happy and meaningful celebration.
