MultiSource: My name is Rob Greenspan. I am a 21 year old senior at Ramapo College. I am a Jewish, American/Hungarian. I enjoy playing music, sports, and dance. Oh yeah, and I’m the Vice President of the Filipino American Student Association.
This probably threw anyone reading this pretty far off. I mean, why would a random white guy join a Filipino club? And even weirder, how does he become the vice president? Funny story.
I was a freshman looking for clubs and orgs to join. At the time, I was specifically looking for a group that had a hip-hop dance crew that I could join because I had just started a year before and wanted to continue. The only group I found was the Filipino club called FASA. A guy name Chi told me about their dance group Overdrive and was really welcoming. So I ended up joining, but I only went to the dance practices and never saw anyone outside of that.
I really got integrated when I decided to go the the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND). I decided to go just because it was a new culture, and it was a huge event. So I was interested. But everyone in FASA just thought, "who the hell is this white kid?" But during the event, through the workshops and the experience of meeting everyone afterwards ended up getting me closer to them than any of my other friends at school.
From then on, I got more and more involved. I became friends with more and more people in the club till eventually, they became my closest friends. And that is why I decided to become Vice President. Because they actually meant something to me and I wanted to give back.
